Type Locality and Naming

The fourth branch of the Third District Survey Team of Yunnan Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources was named in 1989 and publicly quoted by Chengdu Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources and Sichuan Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources Survey Team for the first time in 1992. The named section is located in Bawei, Mingliang Township, Yongde County, Yunnan Province. The reference section is located at Pianhe, Muding Township, Zhenkang County.

Lithology and Thickness

The Bawei Fm is mainly composed of dolomite, calcareous dolomite and dolomitic limestone. The thickness of Bawei group is 113 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The bottom boundary is marked by the first occurrence of dolomite. The formation is in integrated contact with the underlying Permian system.

Upper contact

The top boundary of the Bawei Fm is marked by the last occurrence of dolomite. The formation is in integrated contact with the underlying Permian system.

Regional extent

The Bawei Fm is distributed in Baoshan, Liuku, Shidian, Yongde and Zhenkang in Yunnan.

Conodont: Hadrodontina cf. adunca, Parachirognathus delicatulus

Tong et al. (2019, Triassic integrated stratigraphy and timescale in China, Science China: Earth Sciences, v. 62, no. 1) assign it as spanning the Induan.
